I couldn't reach the colleagues in New York I needed to talk to today because they were in holiday.

    Bugger.

On this day 237 years ago, a bunch of tax evaders decided to abandon links with the most powerful nation in the world.

    Or something.

It really bothers me that people from other nations know about US history and us as Americans don't give a damn about anyone else. Is US history an optional course in other countries?

Not really, it's more that other nations teach world history, so we all know a little and the key points of most countries.
The US education system is very insular tho'

Being your brothers and sisters from the north, it is quite alarming how much we know about you and your history. It is only a few notches down from what born and bread Yankees know.

American History and State Capitals on Jeopardy still often kick my ass.
