    McLaren P1 Concept 2012

    McLaren P1

McLAREN AIMS FOR POLE POSITION IN PARIS

    Sep 18, 2012

McLaren Automotive will use its first ever international motor show appearance to preview its next generation ultimate supercar – the McLaren P1 – which takes much of its technological and spiritual inspiration from the company’s Racing division. The McLaren P1 has one simple goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track.

At the Paris Motor Show, Mondial de l'Automobile 2012, the McLaren P1 is previewed as a design study. Next year a production version, which the company aims to put on sale within 12 months, will be revealed.

‘The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.’

‘Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit,’ says McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff. ‘It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.’

When the McLaren P1 goes into production later next year, it will sit above the 12C and 12C Spider, in terms of both price and performance.

More information will be released following the McLaren Automotive press conference scheduled for 17.45 CEST (16.45 BST), on Thursday 27 September 2012.

    Haha, I just noticed that!

Not as smooth as the original McLaren F1. At least it doesn't look garish like some Ferraris.

More annoying is the fact that their press conference will be at 17.45 and we will have to drive home the same evening....for the rest I will just keep my opinion for myself until I have seen the car. Fortunately I have never played Gran Turismo.

    Fine ass, atrocious face.

Honestly, that front end looks like a mid-nineties kit-car reject.

Huge let down. I was expecting it to be a true successor of the F1, not just technically, but also visually. This is certainly not a looker...

    I never thought the F1 a looker.

This is over the top, but I am not sure I care, as long as it performs.

The original F1 was understated, somewhat like the NSX was.

Either you knew what it was or you'd think it was a Ferrari. The P1 is definitely more flashy, but not to the extent of a Ferrari.

NSX was one of its development inspiration...McLaren's goal was a usable car with superlative performance...They still seem to be following that philosophy even with the 12C...This though is IMO overstyled...

Yes, I remember reading that Gordon Murray was very impressed with the NSX and wanted Honda to make an engine for the F1. However Honda was not able to provide an engine and he got one from BMW instead.

Agreed- the styling of the 12C is nice. This is too over the top, like the Ferraris are today. They stopped looking nice to me at the F430.

It is indeed curious that, while the MP4-12C seems to follow the F1's mantra, this looks completely out of touch with the classic McLaren philosophy.
Lack of charisma can be fatal.

Maybe not in a styling sense, but how do you feel it's out of touch?

I feel like if it is out to top the F1, it already is following the classic McLaren philosophy. If the KERS is functional and helps it go faster, I don't see why it's a problem.

It's the same idea with the Porsche 918 I feel- I'm okay with the hybrid system when the V8 is already potent and sounds wonderful.

That's not the same vibe I get for the new Acura NSX though- I feel that Honda's priority is still fuel economy and that's holding it back from developing an all out driver's car. I still hope it comes out okay though.
