The one with the sloping roof looks to have taken a lot of its inspiration from late-'40s Cadillac Sedanettes and Buick Roadmasters.

I guess it all comes full circle, though, because the squared-off roofline of a Bentley or RR inspired Bill Mitchell to pen the Buick Silver Arrow I concept which became the Riviera, one of the best looking cars of its age.
"Kimi, can you improve on your [race] finish?"
"No. My Finnish is fine; I am from Finland. Do you have any water?"

You mean H.J. Mulliner's Continental Coupé? This isn't the first cars with that type of body, the R-Type Continental was already available with a similar bodystyle, altough I don't know wheter back then H.J. Mulliner got the inspiration from US cars or not.

Yes, the R-Type was still from the early '50s, though, so they had a few years to see the late-'40s GM luxury offerings. It would be an interesting pollination of ideas that goes contrary to the norm if it actually is the case.

EDIT: I am a wrong; back in those days it probably was going in that direction, and the other way is a more modern phenomenon.
