In 1968 the CSI decided to reduce the maximum capacity of the engines in Prototypes from 5 litre to 3 litres, while still allowing Sports to have engines up to 5 litres.

While this was bad for major manufacturers, it was great for small outfits like Jean Rédélé's Alpine, which just the year before had unveiled the A211 with a 3 litre engine.

The new A220 was an evolved version of the A211, with the same engine but a new chassis, which was 80kg heavier than the preceeding car. That made it about 120kg heavier than its biggest rival, the Porsche 908.

It was retired in 1970 after not having scored any significant results.
