How about the Aygo family then? Could probably save you some £?

I quite like the Civic actually, but I don't really fancy one, plus I think it might be a little expensive. I can't afford any of the Aygo family I don't think, plus they're a bit too small for me to live with. Basically, a Fiesta, Polo or Ibiza are my best options, but out of those, to live with from day to day, I prefer the Polo.

Go for the Fiesta. Just do it.

But there are just things that bug me about it that would annoy me on a day to day basis. That and the sliiight possibility of a little smidgen of fanboyism...

It doesn't feel quite as nicely or well put together as the Polo does, there is nowhere for my left foot to go when off the clutch, the gearbox wasn't as smooth, in every driving position I tried the steering wheel blocked off the tops of the Speedo and Rev-Counter from about 50mph-onwards and I like the looks of the Polo better although I'm quite taken by the Zetec models.

In terms of driving though, and if the Puma is anything to go by, it is massively better than the Polo.

The Puma's gearbox was also very good, altough it's true that the build quaity was a bit rubbish.

Based on my experience with Fords and the Polo, I'd go with the Fiesta without any doubt.

Can't say I've found much difference in how the Fiesta and the Polo drive, the Fiesta I's driven had a bit more punch but then it was a 1.4TDCI instead of a 12v 3-pot 1.2. I found the gearbox a bit crunchy and notchy, Polo's is far far smoother, really like the Fiesta, it's just small things that from day to day would make me wish that I'd gone for the Volkswagen.

But have you test driven the Polo properly? If not, do it.

I personally thought that the Puma was very comunicative, nimble and agile. If the Fiesta has kept even a small part of that character is, without any doubt the superior car. The Polo on the other hand is competent, but it feels nowhere near as eager as the Ford in the corners.

Yeah, I drove the Polo fairly hard, and on a road with a sting of big corners. It was probably more chuckable than my car but I'd probably miss the 10/20bhp dependant on whether I find a 65bhp version. I love the noise the 3-pot makes when it gets in it's stride and it was definately nicer and more comfortable to sit in than the Fiesta.

I usually say that I like the noise the blenders inside of Smart Brabus' do.
    I wouldn't call that "a sound".

"Sound" is what most engines do.

And then there are those which make music.

I go to the Wagga revfest (basically a bogan event, but some interesting cars on show) I remember one year they did a short rally stage through the horsey area and on of the competitors had a charade, stripped out, caged, widened track and a big front mount.
You could hear that 990cc over the roar of the V8s, a bit like a noisy rotary. I saw it on display later and there was a 15000 rpm bike tacho in it and a 3 bar boost gauge. The sign said 280hp@10000rpm, 12000 redline. Funny I still remember that.
