The above combination appeared in Britain in 1972 with the 2200 cars.

So that historical distinction may rest with BMC Australia which in late 1970 introduced an Oz-engineered and extensively restyled ADO17 evolution called the Austin 'X6' Tasman & Kimberley. These quite attractive cars featured the first application of the afaik locally conceived E-Series 2200cc OHC inline-six, and mounted transversely or east-west in BMC-speak. My mother used to have an Austin Kimberley. To this day she says it was her favourite of all the cars she has driven. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of her car, but here are a few photos I took when we went to the "All British" car show at Parramatta:
